The Program’s Objectives

Just like any other Gunsmithing programs, the program offered by Colorado School of Trades is designed to teach the needed skills that will let them enter the field. In CST’s Gunsmithing courses, you can expect to train in specialties in the gunsmithing profession, such as general repair, pistolsmithing, custom gun work, accurizing the firearms that will be used for match competitions, producing competition shotguns, rifles and the like. When you have completed the gunsmithing classes of the program, you will receive the Associate of Occupational Studies Degree in Gunsmithing.

You will be able to become well versed in Gunsmithing through repairing customer firearms in United States’ biggest Gunsmithing shop. The methods used in teaching are basically hands on, and have been refined over the past 70 years.

Gunsmithing Courses

The basic course in Gunsmithing in CST lasts for 250 hours. The objective of this course is to teach you the basic use of the tools, math, safety, the purpose of certain equipment as well as make you familiar with metal preparation and stock refinishing as well as recoil pad fitting and the bluing process.

Meanwhile, the machine course of the program lasts for 400 hours and this is made to teach practical and specific uses of certain equipment. Here, you will learn about oxyacetylene welding as well as steel heat treatment. When you have completed this course, you have chambered and threaded a barrel meant for the bolt action rifle and tried test firing it in the booth for test firing within the school.

For 350 hours of stockmaking course, you will be taught the techniques, concepts and skills that will let you build some custom firearms. This course covers several aspects of various stockmaking materials, sights, metal preparation, hand loading theory as well as ballistics.

Finally, the design and function course is considered as the program’s crux composed of 44% of the total hours (800) of the Gunsmithing program.
