Owning a Gunsmith Shop – What Do You Need to Know?

Opening a gunsmith shop is something that many people desire to do. These people are passionate about firearms and want to turn their interest in them into a full time profession. It is well known that the process involved with starting this type of business can be a bit complicated. With that being said, there certainly are ways to make the process go much more smoothly. These ways include being knowledgeable of the laws that pertain to such a business and gaining experience by attending gunsmithing schools.

Before opening a gunsmith shop the proper licenses must be obtained. The most important of these licenses is called a Federal Firearms License. These are issued exclusively by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Those applying will need to confirm that they are over 21 years old and do not have any offenses on their criminal record that would prohibit them from owning or handling guns. Applications are strictly reviewed so it is important that they are filled out honestly.

Applicants will need to have a detailed knowledge of what they want to have available in their gunsmith shop when they apply for a Federal Firearms License. Potential suppliers should be contacted early in the process to help figure this information out. A list of the firearms, ammunition and gunsmithing equipment they plan to have in stock at all times should be put together. Relationships should be set up with these suppliers so inventory can be purchased and stocked quickly should the shop be approved.

It is in this area of the application process that experience gained at gunsmithing schools can be very useful. Those who attend gunsmithing schools have a much deeper understanding of what to include in their application. This will increase their chances of being approved and being seen as a reliable potential owner of a gunsmith shop.

Another legal matter that needs to be considered prior to opening a gunsmith shop is local zoning regulations. Some areas do not allow the presence of shops that handle and sell firearms. The person wanting to open the shop needs to have a general idea of where they want their shop to be before applying for their Federal Firearms License.

After a Federal Firearms License application is approved there is still much work to be done. Inventory needs to be officially ordered and a store location needs to be set up. The proper gun safes need to be purchased along with an alarm system that will deter potential intruders. In many states it is a legal requirement to have an alarm system installed in a gunsmith shop. This is done to reduce theft and illegal sales of stolen firearms.

There is a lot involved in the process of opening and owning a gunsmith shop. However, this should not deter those who desire to open such as establishment from doing it. Being organized, responsible and gaining the proper knowledge at gunsmithing schools will go a long way in making the process more efficient. Once the proper licenses and other approvals are obtained things become much easier and there are great possibilities for success.

The TSJC gunsmithing school offers a 2 year gunsmithing degree program. This highly popular program is offered in the spring and fall semesters. The program consists of basics such as firearms safety, machine shop courses, stockmaking, firearms finishing, and repairs.

Trinidad, Colorado, is a community of about 10,000-12,000 people situated in the Rocky Mountains about 15 miles north of New Mexico and 80 miles south of Pueblo. The city offers free tours on the Trinidad Trolley, and year-long geocaching, and events throughout the year.
Summer Gunsmithing Program

Having had a long and fruitful affiliation with the National Rifle Association, Trinidad State Junior College also offers the NRA Summer Gunsmithing Program. The courses are well-suited for all students, both novice gunmakers and professionals. The school offers one and two week courses in a wide variety of gunsmithing fields, such as stockmaking, engraving, checkering, and custom bluing, as well as related subjects such as knifemaking and scrimshaw, and the assembly of popular models such as the 1911 pistol.

The majority of classes are available for about 350 dollars a week, and housing in the student dorms at around 100 dollars a week. It’s important to note that students will need to bring their own hand tools, and all materials necessary for the completion of the firearm, including the weapon itself. Of course, students will need to comply with local laws concerning gun ownership and possession.

The local Bill Prator gun range, located on County Road 24-6 southeast of Trinidad, is available for student use while taking part in the program. It is newly remodeled, and features a covered range for both pistols and rifles, as well as five concrete shooting-stations.

TSJC Gunsmithing Schools’ Past and Present

Established in the April of 1925, this college was initially housed within Trinidad High School, the college sharing both the faculty and facilities with the school. In 1935, Trinidad State Junior College courses were relocated to a remodeled Tillotson Academy, located on Prospect Street. In the college’s initial years, its courses ranged from Arts and Science Degrees and teacher training courses. The college experienced some anxiety as to where it must be located until in 1939, TSJC became autonomous, followed by its permanent structure which was first built in the year 1941. It was named the Berg Administration Building, named after Mr. Albert Berg who was a member of the committee of the junior college for years. From that initial building, the college has slowly seen improvements and expansions and now, from a mere 73 students, the colleges’ two campuses is already catering to more than 2,200 students aspiring to finish quality courses.

While it is the oldest state college in the Colorado area, it is far from being outdated. The curriculum offered by Trinidad State Junior College is evolving continuously in order to keep up with the dynamic changes in both the community and the needs of its students. As of now, the College offers several 9-month certification programs as well Associate Degrees.

If you are searching through gunsmithing schools to jumpstart your career, Trinidad State Junior College is well worth considering.

This institution is one of the most popular gunsmithing schools in the country. It provides academic and technical training in fields such as such as computer science, accounting, automotive technologies, business technology, gunsmithing and other courses. It also has an approximate student population of 1,200.

How was Pine Technical College Established?

Pine Technical College was built in 1965 when the 24th Minnesota introduced a vocational-technical institution that focused on providing effective educational and technical expertise to its student body.

The Pine Technical College expanded and promoted various programs that offer occupational certificates in different categories such as drafting, auto mechanics and business. The good thing about this technical college is that it doesn’t require the students to pay tuition. To improve the college’s reputation, the president introduced the Employment and Training Center that mainly promotes training and charitable programs.

Gunsmithing Courses Offered by Pine Technical College

In this school, you will learn all about the proper ways of gun and firearms repair. Aside from that, this training also teaches proper gun maintenance. This training involves sensitive tools, and the training environment is organized based on category. In addition to that, the instructors are also well-trained and professional in the respective fields.

Firearms manufacturers are very popular in the industry, so you can apply on that company and do specific works in warranty repair, fabrication and custom departments. You can also establish your own business focusing on mechanics and firearms manufacturing like custom gunsmithing shops that offers guns repair and upgrading guns. Since skills learned in a shop setting are leverageable in other fields, you could find work as a mechanist or metal refinisher.

Pine Technical College is truly remarkable because it provides a high quality course in the gunsmithing field. If gunsmithing is your passion, this might be the school for you.

The school was established in February 1949 with the purpose of reaching the occupational demands of World War II veterans who were required to train in guns. This institution was successfully introduced by Mr. A.W Thacker and other professional skilled Gunsmith artisans.

The mission of the school is to give high quality technical training in just a short period of time. When Mr. A.W. Thacker retired, his nephew Mr. George R. Thacker was assigned to be the president and director of the institution. Under the management of a new president, the school has become a learning institution that mainly provides highly trained and skilled Gunsmithing instruction.

This school is known as an exclusive post-secondary learning institution that is quite similar to other universities. However, the difference of this institution to other colleges is that it mainly focuses hands-on teaching. So, the learning process is conducted on the actual field in a laboratory or shop setting. Since the institution promotes effective hands-on training, the school is composed of instructors who are well-trained in the field. These instructors focus on the concepts of giving the students effective understanding of the curriculum and fcusing on high quality workmanship.

The Pennsylvania Gunsmith School rose in popularity because of the courses and trainings it offers. If you want to enroll in this institution, you should first know the three types of schools that offer gunsmith training. Yes, you can easily find various gun trainings in your local college but not all these local colleges offer the same practices or trainings in this gunsmith school.

Learning Facilities

Since the institution mainly focuses on actual training, they provide students with a “real” working environment. Pennsylvania has a large training workshop where students can freely learn about gunsmithing. The shop is quite amiable because it has a separate section that is organized for training-level gunsmiths.

What are the Career Prospects Provided by the Institution

The institution prepares students for different in-demand careers in the field of gunsmith. You can work as firearms manufacturer who manages fabrication, custom departments and warranty repairs. The shop skills are leverageable, and are applicable in other shop fields, such as a machinist, welder and metal refinisher.

Pennsylvania Gunsmith School Online

You can also reach the institution online where you can be trained as a gunsmith. Of course, after you have passed all the practical exams, it will provide you diploma training in gunsmithing. Since the training is offered online, you can still learn effectively by lecturing all about troubleshooting and how to repair fire arms. In addition to that, you will learn more about basic firearms maintenance.

Lassen Community College offers gunsmithing training to those who are interested in the field. The college is located at Susanville, California and is an affiliate of the National Rifle Association which offer short-term courses on gunsmithing. The school began to operate on May 4, 1925 and the classes were held at the Lassen High School Campus. In 1941, a new classroom building was made through the renovation of the Main Street garage. Because of the campus’ increasing enrollment, a new building was then built in 1945, which is adjacent to Lassen High School Campus. In March 1965, the Lassen Community College District was established together with the election of its Board of Trustees. The school’s new campus was located at Highway 139 and began operating on September 1971. The school provides the students with facilities and equipments such as computer rooms, a gymnasium, library, laboratories, offices, recreational facilities, classrooms and college union that they can use for their studies.

The school offers short courses such as general gunsmithing which will train the students on the basics of gunsmithing. The classes for gunsmithing training may only take a few days or weeks. Courses will include teaching the students with gun repair, disassembling and reassembling and troubleshooting problems of the firearm. The tools in gunsmithing and other things involving the way firearms are manufactured will also be discussed. The students will also acquire knowledge on designing and modifying firearms. Some courses may only take five days while some may take longer. Those who are interested in enrollment may go their website and look for the registration procedures stated at the site. Their summer classes for gunsmithing are from June to August. Lassen Community College also offers regular classes for gunsmithing from September to May. They offer courses on Action and Bolt Modifications, Truing Exterior of Action, Bolt Action Rifle Feeding, Misfire Correction, Single Triggers, Stock Repair and Finish and other courses which are related on the field of gunsmithing.

As always, working opportunities are not limited in the gunsmithing field; students who have finished their gunsmithing courses will have machine shop experience that applies in other machine shop fields.
