Piedmont Community College Gunsmithing School
Piedmont Community College was established in July 1, 1970 as Person Country Institute in Roxboro, North Carolina. The Board of Trustees was appointed in the 1970 after the plan for this kind of school has started in the late 1960s. The school has operated in different locations but acquired a permanent campus built at Roxboro, N.C., when the citizens of Person Country passed a bond issue worth $2.5 million for the school’s new facilities. In July 1, 1985, the service area of the school has already included the Caswell County. In 1987, the Caswell County Campus located at Yanceyville, N.C. was opened to students who want to pursue their studies.
Piedmont Community College is offering courses on gunsmithing for those with an interest in the field. Their gunsmithing courses provide the students with know of skills in the field such as diagnosing and repairing problems on the firearms, metal and wood refurbishing as well as others needed in the gunsmithing industry. Students work on firearms restoration, repair work, barrel work, custom gun work, stock making and tool manufacturing for gunsmithing trade. Students will be awarded with their Gunsmithing Certificate once they have successfully completed the gunsmithing course outline. The semester requires 66 hours and for the students to get their gunsmithing diploma. The major requirements for the program include: GSM 101- Gunsmithing I, GSM 102- Gunsmithing II; GSM 103- Gunsmithing III, GSM 204- Gunsmithing IV and GSM 205- Gunsmithing V.
Students are taught with the skills and knowledge in gunsmithing with hands-on experience that will get them ready for work in the field. With this kind of training, the students will be able to understand all aspects of gunsmithing and apply the skills in their own work. With these skills and training under their belts, students will have the opportunities to work for companies ranging from small gunshops to big firearm companies. The skills gained are also applicable in other fields in which machine shop training is required.
